West Ham one season wonders
|
Was thinking how good Vaz Te and Llunga appeared for us in their first season before quickly displaying their true level. Any other standouts?
Hoping Soucek doesn't join the list

Yeah, season 2 and teams work out your strengths and weaknesses both tactically as a team and individuals. Its why you continually have to be improving with additions to the team / squad and why, for a team outside the rich 6/7, getting recruitment right is critical. We did well early on when Moyes rolled up with the Czech boys and Bowen and they improved us no doubt but now going up another level is more difficult as the very best players want CL guaranteed and / or high wages and cost a lot more. We have to look for the younger, hungry lads like Bowen showing early potential but even that is a risk.
Since last season, in terms of who actually makes the first 11, we lost Lingard and added Zouma. Vlasic might come good next season or might never get there so excluding him at this point. So in many senses we stood still.
A big summer for Moyes and team with an aging squad and only 14 with the quality to be trusted in the first 11 and some positions in the first 11 where we need replacements or better.
In short, no surprise we have lost momentum especially when you factor in, on top of the above, we are playing far more games than last season too.

Diafra Sakho - had a great first season when he even won the Premier League player of the month.
Badly hit with injuries for the 2.5 years after that when he got sold back to France and has done nothing of note since.
